The basic principle of Ayurveda involve two theories


one is Panchamahabhootha theory and the other one is Tridosha theory. According to Ayurveda philosophy every thing is made of five basic elements they are, Pritwi, (earth), Jala(water), Teja(fire), Akasha(ether) and are called Puncha mahabutha. Once again according to Ayurveda all the physiological functions of the body is controlled by three biological units viz. Vata, Pitta, Kapha they are formed of mahabutha only. Physiologically these three dosha are responsible for various functions. 

The science of Ayurveda has eight branches which specialize in different fields of medicine

1. Kaya
2. Bala/Kaumara brutya
3. Graha
4. Shalakya
5. Shalya
6. Agada
7. Rasayana
8. Vajikarana
